A January of remembrances

The first month of the year, gentle reader, is named for an ancient Roman god, Janus, the literally two-faced god of gates, doors, doorways, beginnings and endings. In the following timeline of significant events in local history that transpired in the first month of each new year you will learn of various and sundry beginnings and endings right here where we live.

The format consists of the month and year followed by one or more events. A semi-colon serves to separate multiple events in the same time frame and parenthetical references provide additional information and/or clarification.
