Saturday, March 1 will mark the one-year anniversary of the tornado that devastated Americus in 2007. To commemorate this tragic event, the Board of Directors of the Middle Flint Chapter of the American Red Cross will help Sumter Countians remember that “there is no place like home,” especially Americus.

The March 1 tornado is a moment in Americus’ history that will always touch the lives of the many who experienced the devastation directly and indirectly. It’s a moment that changed and shaped the “shining the city on a hill;” it brought the community together. People from all walks of life pulled together, extending a welcoming hand and at times a warm hug to those affected by the tornado. Volunteers showered Americus from near and far and the Board of the Red Cross, in its own special way is using the anniversary not only as a moment of reflection but also one of gratitude.

According to event committee chairman Marty McDonald, the event started as a small celebration to thank the people who volunteered during the tornado but has grown into that incorporating all surrounding communities.

“We had so many people to volunteer and wanted to thank them. It’s a celebration for the recovery efforts and the hard work of those who helped a long the way. It has grown and is continuing to grow,” said McDonald.

From 1-8 p.m. at the Americus-Sumter Recreation Parks Complex, U.S. Highway 19 South, families, civic organizations, law enforcement agencies, churches and many more from Sumter, Schley, Webster and Marion counties will partake in activities that caters to all ages.

A majority of the themes will surround the well-known saying from the Wizard of Oz, “there’s no place like home.”

“That phrase means a lot to us right now because ‘there is no place like home,’” said Leisa Cross, executive director of the local Red Cross Chapter.

The event will feature a wide range of musical acts from gospel to country with a special finale by Brent Cobb. “Brent is a young man from Schley County who is making it big in Nashville right now. He will perform many of his songs including, ‘Dirt Road of Georgia,’” said Cross.

There will be jumping castles and a costume contest for the children and a softball game between firefighters of the Americus Fire and Emergency Services and members of local law enforcement agencies.

“We are looking to having a great time,” said Cross.

Both Cross and McDonald said there is room for other organizations and churches to participate and volunteer their time to the event.

“This is a big community event, for everybody,” said Cross.

“We encourage all to come out and those who are interested in volunteering or participating not to hesitate. We welcome all,” said McDonald.

“The more people we have helping, the more people we have celebrating, which makes us all happy,” continued Cross.
