AMERICUS

Bill McGowan, former mayor of Americus, qualified last week for election to the office of Sumter County tax commissioner. He faces opposition from Betty Story, the incumbent, who also qualified last week.

McGowan issued the following statement Monday.

“It would be an honor to serve as a your tax commissioner. Having grown up here, my family and I have always taken great pride in Sumter County. I believe my years of experience in government will enable me to serve the people well. I am committed to an accurate accounting of the people’s money. I will provide good customer service that our citizens deserve and expect. I will maintain good working relationships with my fellow officials and the many dedicated hardworking employees of Sumter County.”

In addition to having served as mayor, McGowan has also served as a member of City Council, current chair of the Sumter County Emergency Planning Committee, member of the Georgia Power Authority, president of the Eighth District of the Georgia Municipal Association, member of the Georgia Regional Advisory Council and board member of the Middle Flint Regional Development Center.

An Americus native, McGowan attended Americus public schools and earned a bachelor of science degree in political science from Georgia Southwestern College. A Vietnam veteran, he served his country in the U.S. Air Force.

McGowan and his wife Charlene have three children: Babe, Harry and Amy.

He is a member of First Baptist Church of Americus and the Americus Kiwanis Club. He is a Mason, a Shriner and vice commander of the American Legion Post 2, Americus.
