Tracy Wilson, the 2007 Teacher of the Year from Sumter County Schools, along with Superintendent Dennis McMahon and Barbi Cowan, director of the Special Education Program in Sumter County Schools, were to leave today for a special trip to Atlanta.

Wilson was selected as one of the Top 10 Finalists for Georgia Teacher of the Year. She will be honored for her educational successes and selection as the top 10 in Georgia.

Wilson, the only teacher selected from the Southwest Georgia Region, has been a special education teacher in Sumter County Schools for all of her 19 years in education.

“It has been wonderful to serve the citizens and students of Sumter County as a teacher. And now, to be recognized as a top 10 Teacher of the Year finalist, makes me more proud to be an educator.

“I will not be traveling to Atlanta in my luxury Rob Doll Buick, but will be going with others from Sumter County Schools. I am excited and proud to be recognized in Sumter County and in Georgia for my efforts for kids with special needs,” said Wilson.

McMahon said, “I have been superintendent of Sumter County Schools for three years. To have a top 10 finalist in the Georgia Teacher of the Year program for two of these years is a gift that most superintendents never enjoy.”

The local Rob Doll dealership presented Wilson with a new Buick upon her announcement as Teacher of the Year for Sumter County Schools. The 2008 Buick is equipped with all possible options, including On Star and Satellite Radio.

“I wish I could keep this great car. I only buy gas for this car. Steve Nelson of Rob Doll pays all insurance, all service needs and all routine upkeep on this gift car. I only pay for gas. It will be hard to give it up on Oct. 15, 2008, the anniversary of the announcement of my selection,” said Wilson.
