Help the Times-Recorder fight hunger

During the month October, the local community is invited to participate in the “Headlines for Hunger” food drive. Each participating South Georgia Media Group office, including the Americus Times-Recorder, was provided a food drive box from a local food bank.

Food will be distributed to families in need in Sumter County via the food bank in Albany. Beginning today through Oct. 31, the Times-Recorder will collect canned food from the community. The Times-Recorder food drive box is located in its front office, 101 Ga. Highway 27 East.

This is a great opportunity for all of those who are fortunate to take part in helping those who are less fortunate. Every community has people with needs. The Times-Recorder, as a local newspaper company, can make a difference in the lives of those around us, explained Dan Sutton, publisher of the Times-Recorder.

Senior citizens, children, the homeless, the unemployed and the disabled are generally associated with the issue of hunger. There is also a growing segment of the population that is struggling with hunger each day: the working poor. These individuals maintain regular employment, but their pay falls well below the national poverty level. Most of the working poor graduated from high school, and some from college. The harsh reality is that hunger is a problem in the local communities. The good news is there is a cure, said Sutton.
