Today is the day that the candidates for City Council have been awaiting. Today is election day, and in Americus, Andersonville and Plains voters will be going to the polls to let their voices be heard.

Americus features two contested elections in Districts 4 and 1. Two candidates are in the running for the District 4 seat vacated by Alex Saratsiotis, who decided not to seek reelection: Carla Gammage Cook and Bobby Harris. Two candidates are also running for the District 1 seat vacated by Eddie Rhea Walker, who retired: Albert Cooper Sr. and Juanita F. Wilson.

Mayor Barry Blount, District 3 Council member Lou Chase, and District 5 Council member Lorenzo Johnson are all running unopposed.

Three City voting precincts will be open today: Districts 1 and 6 voters will be voting at Rees Park Economic Development Center. District 3 and 4 voters will be voting at the Griffin Bell Golf and Conference Center, and Districts 2 and 5 will be voting in the old recreation department building on Rucker Street next to the Sumter County Health Department.

The City of Plains also features two contested races for city council. In Post 2, John (Johnny) Walker Sr. is running against incumbent Eugene Edge Sr. In Post 6, Amy E. Wise is running against incumbent Andrea D. Oates. Mayor L.E. (Boze) Godwin and Post 1 Council member Jimmy Bagwell are running unopposed. Voters in Plains will cast their ballots at the precinct building next to City Hall.

The City of Andersonville has one contested race, Post Three. Velma Coley and Bobby Hobbs are running for the open seat vacated by Roy Carter. Voters can cast their ballots at the Andersonville Fire Station, located at 106 N. Oglethorpe St.
