SGTC attends Fountain City Classic Career Expo, Job Fair

From Staff Reports
The Americus Times-Recorder

COLUMBUS

South Georgia Technical College’s (SGTC) Career Services department was among 3,000 people attending the first Fountain City Classic Career Expo and Job Fair at the Columbus Convention and Trade Center Exhibit Hall recently. Approximately 30 educational and support agencies were on hand, in addition to about 70 employers.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 18 of the 20 fastest growing occupations within the next decade will require career and technical education, which can ensure that graduates are technically trained and can compete for jobs in demand.

In October, the U.S. unemployment rate rose to 10.2 percent, its highest level in 26 years. Nationally, six people are competing for every available job, according to U.S. Department of Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond.

SGTC participation allowed for face-to-face dialogue with prospects interested in returning to school to enhance their technical skills in today’s tough job market. There were hundreds of motivated job seekers, and well over 200 SGTC recruitment bags were shared.

SGTC’s Career Services department currently has a 98% job placement rate for graduates. For more information about South Georgia Technical College and services provided by Career Services, call 931-2057 or visit www.southgatech.edu.
