Woman’s Literary Club meets

The Americus Times-Recorder

AMERICUS

The October meeting of the Woman’s Literary Club, held in the Social Hall of Calvary Episcopal Church, featured David Garrison, Ph.D., as speaker. Garrison, Dean of Arts and Sciences and professor of English at Georgia Southwestern State University, presented works from five American poets, each born in the 20th century. The poems, by authors Robert Hayden, James Wright, Sharon Olds, Mark Jarman and Li-Young Lee, were movingly read and commented upon by Garrison, eliciting appreciative responses by members. The theme of “Fathers” emerged from the readings.

President Anne Hurst called the meeting to order, followed by the roll call by Secretary Sarah Jo Roush, who also gave a brief devotional and read the minutes of the September meeting.

Nancy Harvey gave an enthusiastic review of the book “Two Gardeners: a Friendship in Letters.” Edited by Emily Herring Wilson, the book consists of over 150 letters exchanged by Katherine S. White and Elizabeth Lawrence over two decades. The correspondence was initiated by a fan letter from Lawrence to White after a gardening column of the latter’s appeared in “The New Yorker.” Both women were distinguished journalists and gardeners.

Following the presentation of a gift to the speaker by Vice President Sadie McLeod, members enjoyed delicious refreshments prepared by hostesses Carolyn Billings, Mary Ferrill and Karen Kinnamon.

Other members present not previously mentioned were Blue Argo, Dolores Capitan, Sue Cornwell, Evelyn Davis, Mary Faye Dudley, Beth Lane, Martha Maddox, Ruth Maloy and Angela Sprott..
