Arrest made in weapons investigation, more arrests pending

AMERICUS — In a press release Tuesday Sumter County Sheriff Pete Smith sais deputies had recovered 21 weapons to include rifles, shotguns and pistols in reference to a series of residential burglaries and vehicle thefts within the county.  The weapons were recovered upon surveillance and searches being conducted in the county.

Arrest warrants have been issued in this case and arrests are pending. Suspect Omar Barron was arrested Tuesday the Americus Police Department on unrelated charges but will be formally charged and arrest warrants issued in reference to these burglaries.  

The weapons are being checked through open cases and owners will be notified upon verification of the weapons.  The Sheriff’s Office urges anyone who has had a weapon stolen within the past two years and has not filed a report to please contact the Sheriff’s Office in regards to these weapons.  

The Sheriff’s Office received significant assistance from the Americus Police Department CID division.  Some weapons have been turned over to the city that had been reported stolen within the city limits.

The value of the recovered weapons is between $15,000 and $18,000. A total of 30 weapons have been recovered during the course of this operation. Additional arrests are pending in this ongoing investigation.
