‘Bee’ for Literacy is March 13

AMERICUS — It’s time to brush up on your “words” again as preparations continue for the annual Bee for Literacy, a community spelling competition sponsored by LEAP and Americus Literacy Action Inc. (ALAI)

The fun event starts at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 13 at Lake Blackshear Regional Library, 3-7 E. Lamar St. and admission is $3 per person. Concessions of pizza, popcorn and soft drinks will be for sale and there will also be a raffle for prizes donated by Minick Interiors, Farmers Feed & Seed, Little Brother’s Bistro and South Georgia Technical College.

Brittany Dawson, executive director of LEAP, said there are nine teams signed up so far: Junior Service League of Americus, Citizens Bank, Americus Kiwanis Club, Clinic Drug Store, Southland Academy, two teams from Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW), and a Sumter County Middle School team sponsored by the UPS Store.

Dawson said more teams are welcome to sign up for competition. Entry fee is $375 per team. If interested in signing up a team or donating for door prizes, call Dawson at 924-9443,

Jeff Waldrop, a professor of English at GSW, will be the official announcer for the Bee.

This is the only fundraiser undertaken by LEAP and ALAI and that’s why participation is so important.

The fundraiser is to reduce the rate of illiteracy in Sumter County through ALAI, which provides tutors to teach adults to read, and through LEAP, which issues GED scholarships and transportation vouchers to students enrolled in adult education classes.”

The Bee for Literacy is a family-friendly event so plan to come out  to cheer on those competing for the first-place title.
