Fatal fire under investigation

LESLIE —  A fire that claimed a life Sunday remains under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Ofifice.

Sumter County Fire Chief John Ekaitis said the call came into the E-911 Center at 1:45 p.m. Sunday to 608 R.W. Jones Road in rural southern Sumter County near the Lee County line.

The victim was identified as Doris Ann Fields, 68, of 608 R.W. Jones Road, Leslie, according to Deputy Coronor Buddy Wilbanks. He said Fields was "dead at the scene" of the fire and her body was transported to the State Crime Lab.

Another resident, the elderly mother of the victim, was airlifted to a Macon hospital, and was still being treated on Wednesday.

Ekaitis said six units and 34 firefighters from the Sumter Fire Department battled the fire at the single-family home which was "fully involved" upon their arrival. He said mutual aid came from the Lee County Fire Department. The Sumter County Sheriff's Office and Vital Care also responded, he said.

“These firefighters did a good job, although it was a total loss," Ekaitis said.

Fire personnel managed to save half the structure.

An investigator from the Georgia Fire Marshal’s Office arrived late Sunday afternoon to begin his investigation. A call to the investigator was not returned on Wednesday.
