Georgia Southwestern celebrates the spring class of 2014

AMERICUS — Roughly 300 Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) students earned degrees May 10 during Spring Commencement in Convocation Hall of the GSW Student Success Center. Paul Jones, Ph.D., interim president at Darton State College, was keynote speaker.

Jones encouraged the students to enjoy their gifts because, as new college graduates, “(they) leave GSW blessed.”

As is customarily the case, the commencement venue was at capacity crowd. New to this semester’s collection of degrees earned were the master of science in nursing recipients to go along with the master of business administration, and master of science in Computer science. GSW offers bachelor’s degrees in 40 different areas of study.

Prior to commencement, students earning graduate degrees took part in a hooding ceremony in the Jackson Performance Hall. A new tradition on campus, this event pays homage to students who have pursued advanced degrees.

During commencement, Lynn Larsen from the School of Education was named the 2014 Professor of the Year. Jeffrey Waldrop, Ph.D., professor of English and 2013 recipient of the Excellence and Commitment to Teaching award, served as the Macebearer and delivered the reflection. Gary Kline, Ph.D., professor political science, served as the Grand Marshal.
