State Board of Education serves notice for hearing with Sumter BOE

AMERICUS — The Georgia State Board of Education released a notice Monday to the members of the Sumter County Board of Education (BOE) of a hearing to be held at 8 a.m. July 18 in Atlanta. The hearing concerns whether the State Board should recommend to the Governor that he suspend the members of the Sumter BOE based on being placed on accreditation probation by SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools).

The BOE will have to present evidence to the State Board why it should not recommend suspension.

The BOE approved a consent order with the State Board of Education at a special called meeting Thursday. If the order is accepted by the State Board, it may allow the BOE more time to achieve the required actions recommended by SACS before the State Board decides whether or not to recommend the suspension of the current Sumter Board.

In March the State Board recommended to the Governor the Miller County School  Board be removed. Gov. Nathan Deal has yet to make a decision regarding the recommendation.
