House Bill 836 Signed into Law by Governor

ATLANTA — Rep. Mike Cheokas Announces House Bill 836 Signed into Law by Governor

On Tuesday Governor Nathan Deal signed House Bill 836 into law. This bill calls for local elections to fill the expired terms of four members of the Sumter County Board of Education from School Board Districts 1, 2, 4, and 6, as these districts existed as of December 31, 2013.  Under this bill, newly elected members will take office immediately following the election and will serve for terms of office that will end on December, 31, 2014. This bill also states that the five current members of the Sumter County Board of Education who represent Districts 3, 5, 7, 8, and 9 shall serve out the remainder of their terms, which will also end on December, 31, 2014.  Under HB 836, seven board members will be elected to Districts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and two at large during the nonpartisan general election in 2014. The new school districts mirror the current Sumter County Commission Districts.

“The Sumter County School system has been facing accreditation problems, and this piece of legislation seeks to eliminate those issues,” said Rep. Cheokas. “The students of Sumter County will benefit greatly from this measure, and they will no longer face the risk of losing the HOPE scholarship due to these discrepancies.”
