Over 20 arrested in multi-agency drug sting

AMERICUS — According to a new release sent out Tuesday, the Sumter County Sheriff's Office, with assistance from DEA, Lee County Sheriff's Office and Taylor County Sheriff's Office, initiated a narcotics investigation targeting a multi-county drug trafficking network.

As of Tuesday arrest warrants have been taken for approximately 30 defendants in reference to this investigation. Approximately 50 law enforcement officers from 10 additional agencies were on hand to participate in the execution of these arrest warrants.

The participating agencies are the Sumter County Sheriff's Office, Americus Police Department; Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Region 3,Probation and Parole, Department of Natural Resources, Drug Enforcement Agency, Taylor County Sheriff's Office, Lee County Sheriff's Office, The Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms and the Georgia State Patrol.

Arrest began at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday and will continue throughout the next several days. Smith acknowledged and showed appreciation to all of these participating agencies.

In the news release Smith said “without the sharing of resources and manpower among these agencies, long term multi-jurisdictional investigations would not be possible.” Smith extended particular appreciation to the deputies of the Lee County Sheriff's Office and Sheriff Reggie Rachels, who provided close to 2500 hours of manpower to this investigation.

Sheriff Smith stated that this investigation will continue for approximately one month and additional arrests are pending.

Smith provided additional information regarding the operation in a phone interview with the Times-Recorder. He said the operation began four months ago in Taylor County when that department provided information from their investigation that linked to an individual that the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office had been targeting. “They passed the ball and we ran with it,” Smith said.

The extensive investigation targeted “major street level dealers” and other resources had to be called in to deal with an operation of this magnitude.  The time put into the investigation, just running tags and documentation, were enough to warrant the help of other agencies. According to Smith, the DEA already had an interest in the investigation because they had files on some of the subjects already. Smith said the Lee County department’s drug task force was also essential to the operation as the five man team provided around the clock surveillance during periods of the investigation.

“People think you can just go out and make an arrest,” Smith said,”It’s very time consuming.”

The Sheriff said he feelsgood about the end result and says it’s just the first phase of the operation. The substances the criminals are dealing with run the gamut of street drugs, from marijuana to cocaine, crack and crystal meth. Smith was particularly happy that no one had been injured in the investigation or during the arrests of the criminals, which he credited to strategic planning.
