Cheokas narrowly keeps seat in State House

AMERICUS — State Rep. Mike Cheokas, R-Americus, narrowly held onto his District 138 seat in Tuesday’s election, edging by contender Kevin Brown, a Democrat from Buena Vista, by a 50.64 percent to 49.36 percent margin.

Cheokas failed to carry his home county with Sumter voters choosing Brown 5,149 votes to Cheokas’ 4,690.

The other counties in the district voted as follows.

Chattahoochee chose Brown over Cheokas 729 to 639. Voters in Marion County narrowly chose Brown 1,547 to Cheokas’ 1,535. Schley County voters chose Cheokas overwhelmingly with 1,225 to Brown’s 459.

Cheokas total votes in the district numbered 8,089 to Brown’s 7,884.

In the Second Congressional District, incumbent Democrat Sanford Bishop was returned to office over Republican opponent John House. Sumter County voters gave Bishop 6,931 votes (59.71 percent) to House’s 4,676 (40.29 percent).

Shirley Duke, incumbent Chief Magistrate Judge of Sumter County, will serve another term in office. Duke received 7,375 votes (66.17 percent) to Sherry Ratliff’s 3,781 (33.83 percent).

In the District 1 race for Sumter County Board of Commissioners, Harvey Claiborne netted 680 votes (30.48 percent) to Clay Jones’ 1,551 (69.52 percent).

In the District 3 race, George Torbert was elected with 1,457 votes (58.23 percent) to Tangalia Robinson’s 1,045 (41.77 percent).

In District 5, incumbent Andrea Brooks was reelected with 1,442 votes (73.20 percent) to Carey Harbuck’s 528 (26.80 percent).

Sumter Countians passed Amendment 1 (charter schools) with 5,912 yes votes (52.25 percent) to 5,402 no votes (47.75 percent).

They also approved Amendment 2 (multi-year government leases) with 6,438 yes votes (60.62 percent) to 4,183 no votes (39.38 percent).

Voters in the City of Americus approved an ordinance allowing for sale of alcoholic beverages in eligible hotels and restaurants on Sunday, recording  3,122 yes votes (57.24 percent) to 2,332 no votes (42.76 percent).
