Sumter resident challenges Commissioner’s voter registration

AMERICUS — A called meeting of the Sumter County Board of Elections was held Monday in which the Board conducted a hearing regarding a challenge to a voter’s registration; in question was the address of Sumter County Commissioner Rick Davis. The challenge was made by Sumter County resident Aaron Cosby.

Davis announced at the hearing that he would not be seeking reelection. He suggested that the upcoming election may be the reason he was being challenged on his address. County Attorney, Bill NeSmith said any question of Davis’ ability to serve regarding a change of residence or address was beyond the power of the Board. The Board of Elections, as NeSmith explained, could only determine the validity of a vote if in fact Davis had cast a vote since changing his residence. Davis told the Board he had not cast a vote since November 2010.

Davis explained that he sold his home at 102 South Forty Circle on Sept. 30, 2011, and moved temporarily to 133 Riverside Drive, a “lake home” that he has owned since October 2007. He said since selling the South Forty home he has planned to build a new home in the South Forty subdivision on land that he already owns; however, due the slow economy he has not begun building.

It was reported in Tuesday’s edtion of the Times-Recorder thatDavis, the District 3 representative on the Sumter County Board of Commissioners, will not be seeking reelection to a second term.

Davis issued the following statement.

“I will not seek a second term as District 3 County Commissioner. Serving as a commissioner has been an honor and a privilege. I have learned a tremendous amount concerning local and state government. I plan to serve the remainder of this term and I am sure there are other citizens that will step up and be willing to serve the citizens of District 3 in the future. Thank you for allowing me to serve.”
