American Pickers’ Sumter County episode to air March 14

AMERICUS — At 9 p.m. March 14, an episode of American Pickers featuring Ed Lowell of Americus, will air on the History Channel. The hosts of the show, Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz, filmed the episode at Lowell’s home on Sept. 19, 2010.

Lowell is an avid collector of military gear and his inventory includes a vast range of interesting items, to say the least. From pilot helmets, airplane propellers and even a surface-to-air missile, there were plenty of collectibles for the professional antique hunters to check out.

Lowell’s collection is expansive and includes a variety of vehicles, military and otherwise, as well as more than 100 gasoline engines, of which Lowell is particularly proud.

“I’m interested in anything associated with the military, or that’s mechanical,” Lowell said in an interview with the Americus Times-Recorder at his home in November.

He said he began bringing truck loads of “neat stuff” to his Georgia home from Maine where he would visit his parents after he retired in 1984. He had careers as a mechanic for the U.S. Air Force and as an engineer and draftsman in the mobile home industry which explains the nature of his collection.

Lowell said the television crew and the “pickers” were pressed for time during their visit, but expressed interest in many of his items and ultimately purchased several, including military signs, automobile pamphlets and discontinued model airplanes.

American Pickers has appeared on the History Channel since early 2010. The show follows Wolfe and Fritz around rural areas of the country in search of great finds from amateur collectors. Tune into the History Channel March 14 to watch the episode.
