South Ga. Tech student murdered in Va.

Norfolk,VA — James Stanford Robertson II, 19, the son of two Americus natives was recently beaten to death by a gang in Norfolk, Va. Robertson, who was a South Georgia Technical College student, along with another male relative was visiting his cousin who is stationed in Norfolk when they were gang beaten July 27, explained his stepmother Vera Sykes of Americus Thursday.

Sykes said her stepson and his cousins met a group of juvenile girls during his two weeks’ stay in Norfolk. The girls lured them to a party “on the bad side” of town, she said.

Sykes said, from the information she has gathered, a man approached Robertson and his cousins when they pulled up and got out of the car for the alleged party.

The unknown man asked them where they were from, they said “Georgia” and that’s when he made some type of gang call or sound and approximately five black females and eight males came from hiding and jumped on the victims. The Norfolk Police confirmed the number of assailants. They stomped, punched and pistol whipped the three men, according to Sykes

The victims were stripped and robbed before they were beaten, according to the police. Robertson’s two cousins eventually managed to escape and get help from a nearby business. Robertson was taken to Santara Norfolk General Hospital where he eventually died from his injuries. Sykes said the family was on its way from Americus to Norfolk when they got a call on the cell phone from the hospital explaining that Robertson had died.

So far, four female juveniles and two adult males, Raymond Ahmad, 29, and Melvin Arrington, 18, have been arrested and charged in connection with the robbery, beatings and murder and more arrests are expected, according to Norfolk Police.

“It was senseless and merciless,” said Sykes Thursday about the murder of her stepson. “I don’t know if they (assailants) deserve any mercy. James wasn’t the type of person that bothered people.”
