Traffic crash claims two young lives

AMERICUS — An early morning traffic crash claimed the lives of two teens Wednesday and injured two more.

According to information released from the Georgia State Patrol Post 10, which investigated, the crash occurred at approximately 5:50 a.m. Wednesday about three miles west of Ellaville on Ebenezer Road in Schley County.

According to the release, a 1998 Ford Expedition, driven by Joshua Chad Phagan, 17, left the roadway, overturned and struck a tree. Schley County Coroner Johnny Wall pronounced Phagan and a passenger, 15-year-old Jeffrey Cox, dead at the scene.

The release also says that two other passengers, Cody Calloway and Michael Smith, both 17, were injured in the crash and were transported to the Columbus Medical Center where they were reported in stable condition Wednesday afternoon.

All four teens are from Ellaville and all students at Schley County High School, according to the report. The Schley County Sheriff’s Office assisted the state patrol in the investigation and the Marion and Webster county EMS units assisted the Schley County Fire Department with rescue.

The release says neither the driver nor any of the passengers were wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, and that part of the investigation, which is ongoing, will determine if any drugs and/or alcohol were involved.
