Miss SAR Pageant to be held March 21

AMERICUS — On March 21, Southland Academy will crown the 21st Miss Southland Academy Raider, better known as Miss SAR. The Miss SAR Pageant was started in 1989, by the MOMS Group (Mothers of Motivated Students, now a part of Southland PTO). The pageant was thought to be a great idea to generate funds for the Thomas A. Greene Scholarship Fund. The scholarship fund is used to help Southland students with financial need. This year funds will also go toward the Madeline Anne Wildes Scholarship Fund, which is a new scholarship fund for students with financial need.

The contestants are selected for the pageant by the high school clubs. The clubs select the young women who they feel will be good representatives for Southland Academy as Miss SAR. The clubs are promoted by the contestants during the time period leading up to the pageant, as well as, at the pageant. The clubs also make a monetary donation to their contestant to help with pageant expenses. The contestants also choose a charity to support much like the Miss America System with its platforms. The contestant crowned as Miss SAR is able to present her charity with a nice donation sponsored by the Junior Beta Club.

The contestants also volunteer their time to assist with the Southland Raider Club's Miss Southland Sweetheart Pageant which is for the younger girls at Southland. Although each contestant is aiming for the crown, leadership skills and volunteerism are both displayed by the contestants with the example they exhibit in helping others. The pageant has become a tradition at Southland that everyone looks forward to with pride.

The 2009 contestants are Senior Ivy O'Hern, daughter of Kathy and Richard O'Hern of Americus; Juniors Kaitlyn Alston, daughter of Sandy and Gordon Alston of Preston; Brittany Daniel, daughter of Stacie and Carl Daniel of Americus; Christian Felton, daughter of Karen and Richmond Felton of Marshallville; Haley Jones, daughter of Leila and Tim Jones of Americus; and Sophomores Ansley Jones, daughter of Wendy and Darryl Jones of Preston; Alex Harrell, daughter of Jan and Tommy Harrell of Americus; and Sally Anne Russell, daughter of Leigh Anne and Buddy Russell of Americus.

The pageant is at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 21 at Southland Academy's Melvin T. Kinslow Gymnatorium. Tickets are available in the office at Southland Academy for $8 in advance or at the pageant for $10.
