Mary Katherine Gettys

CORDELE — Funeral services for Mary Katherine Gettys of Cordele will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at Americus First Presbyterian Church. The committal service will follow at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Sunnyside Cemetery in Cordele. The family will greet friends immediately following the service at the church and also immediately following the committal at Sunnyside. Mrs. Gettys, 77, passed away Sunday at Crisp Regional Hospital in Cordele. She was born in Lancaster, S.C. and was the daughter of the late John Douglas and Bertha McDow Glenn. She was a graduate of Erskine College of Due West, SC where she received a BS degree. Her most important role in life was being the wife of a minister and a loving mother and grandmother. She was a teacher, a librarian, and also worked with the Alabama Department of Mental Health. Mrs. Gettys was an active member of Mountain Presbyterian Church in Blairsville and also faithfully attended Americus First Presbyterian Church. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Rev. William Gettys of Cordele; three daughters and their husbands, Venise and Mark Grier of Lancaster SC, Loida and Marcus Waters of Cordele, and Angie and Steve Thompson of Baton Rouge, LA; seven grandchildren, Rebecca Ferguson and her husband, Johnny, Julia Norman and her husband, Audie, Hannah Mercer, Ryan Thompson, Rachel Thompson, Stevie Thompson and Ross Thompson; and one great-granddaughter, Elliot Ferguson. She was preceded in death by a son, Scott Gettys and a brother, Edward Glenn. Anyone wishing to honor Mrs. Gettys with memorials may send them to the church or charity of their choice.
