Funeral services for Eunice Lee Smith Butts, affectionately known as “Big Ma” and “Ms. Frankie,” will be held at 1 p.m. today, Nov. 24, 2010, at Union Tabernacle Baptist Church with the Rev. Tommie Jordan officiating. Burial will follow at the Eastview Cemetery.
Mrs. Eunice Lee Smith Butts was born June 3, 1909, on a farm in Leslie, Ga., to the parentage of the late Mr. Greene Smith and Mrs. Henrietta Floyd Smith. She received her education in the public schools of Oak Grove Huntington.
Mrs. Eunice Lee Smith Butts met and married the late Mr. Edgar Butts Sr. and to their union nine children were born. She was a long time member of Perry Grove Missionary Baptist Church, where she served faithfully in her earlier years by singing in the choir, serving as Mission president and treasurer. Being the oldest member of the church, Mrs. Eunice Lee Smith Butts was honored with the title and duties of serving as “the Mother” of Perry Grove Baptist Church. After 101 years of life on this earth, Mrs. Eunice Lee Smith Butts accepted her calling home to be with the Lord and those family members who had gone on before her.
She is preceded in death by all of her siblings: Ms. Victoria Holmes, Ms. Minnie Hampton, Ms. Inez Holley, Ms. Ida Mae Hampton, Ms. Henrietta Dismuke, Ms. Mary Lizzie Green, Ms. Sarah Frances Brown, Mr. William Smith, Mr. Tim Smith and Mr. J.D. Smith. She is also preceded in death by three of her sons and one grandson: Mr. Jennilee Butts “Bunch,” Mr. Edgar Butts Jr. “Frog,” Mr. Ulysses Butts and Mr. Eddie Butts Jr. “Punchy.”
She leaves to cherish her loving memories, her daughters: Ms. Mildred Sneed, Ms. Janie Ruth Butts, Ms. Bobbie Jean Wise, Ms. Thelma Hayes and Ms. Gail Butts Peeples; her sons: Mr. James Butts and Mr. Eddie Butts Sr.; two devoted nephews Mr. Willie (Ella) Dismuke of Tampa, Fla., and Mr. Matthew Smith of Atlanta, Ga.; several devoted grandchildren: Mrs. Tonya (Darrius) Walker, Mr. Marcus (Keisha) Wise, Mr. Major Wise, Mrs. Latoya (Dexter) Cutts, Ms. Eddie Jean Butts, Mr. Timothy Butts; several devoted god children: Mr. Miller Rush and Mrs. Emma Jean Rush, Mr. James Merritt and Mrs. Eula Merritt, Mrs. Flora Waymon, Mr. and Mrs. Willie C. Sneed, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sneed, Mr. Benjamin Sneed and Ms. Shell Sneed; three devoted daughters-in-law: Mary Lou Clemons, Mary “Tiny” Butts and Mrs. Odessa (James) Jackson of Riviera Beach, Fla., and a host of other devoted grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, family and friends.
