John L. Banner Jr.: January 22, 2013

Falmouth, Mass. — Lt. Col. John L. Banner Jr., 85, died on Jan. 22, 2013, at Falmouth Hospital. A retired U.S. Air Force pilot, he was born in Americus, Ga. He joined the U.S. Navy during the latter days of  World War II. After discharging from the Navy, he attended Georgia Southwestern College  and then Florida State University. He then joined the USAF Cadet Pilot Training program.

A veteran of the Korean and Viet Nam wars, he was the CO of the 553rd Air Reconnaissance wing and flew missions in Lockheed EC-121. He was a member of the Quiet Birdman and Military Officers Association of America, and was a proud member of the Falmouth Militia. Following retirement from the Air Force in 1971, he worked in real estate, later founding Banner Real Estate.

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years Stella and six children, Karla, John III, Linda, Donna, Brenda and Steve and six grandchildren, Rebecca, Victoria, Patrick, David, Lydia and Callan.

Visiting hours were from 4-7 p.m. Jan. 24 at Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 475 Main St., Falmouth Center.

A funeral service took place at 8:30 a.m. on Jan. 25 at the funeral home.

Burial followed in the VA National Cemetery, Bourne, Mass.
