Our Opinion: Sumter School Board needs to move forward

AMERICUS — Perhaps the developments of last week (calling of special school board elections and dismissal of the local Board’s lawsuit against the State Board of Education and Governor) will eventually undo some of the backward motion the district has experienced in terms of its governing board.

Since 2012, the district’s teachers and administrators have done a great job of maintaining its focus of teaching and learning despite the havoc the majority of the Board has imposed on the community. And not only were the circumstances trying because of the dysfunction of the BOE, but there were other issues at play, including funding cuts, school consolidation and numerous personnel shifts in both the central office and individual school leadership positions.

It is now time to move forward and we will soon find out the level of interest and engagement the community actually has in its local public school system. Qualifying for the special called BOE election begins today and we hope that responsible and genuinely concerned candidates heed the call of public service. The reason we have periodic elections in this country is because change in leadership is often good.
