Our Opinion: House Bill 836 is step in right direction

AMERICUS — HB 836, signed by our local legislative delegation Tuesday, and hopefully passed by the state Senate early next week, will allow for a special called election in March and another election in May. This will pave the way for legislation that was supposed to be implemented two years ago.

Our elected officials in any capacity should always take seriously the electorate that put them in office. It is not ethical for elected officials serving on a board, council or commission to form alliances within a governing body and attempt to undo important policy or legislation created by a previous board, taking months and years of  legal maneuvering (and using public funds) solely for the purpose of maintaining a specific board make-up or number of seats, which should not matter anyway.

The board in its current incarnation operates, for the most part, fine as a unit and often cast unanimous votes on important issues, illustrating that agreement among the nine members is not abnormal, but normal.  It is the struggle for power that presents the most problems. This legislation will hopefully put an end to much of the unnecessary confusion, and usher in an era of positive public perception for the Sumter County school district.
