DRANEVILLE — Lukas Teasley went 3-for-4 with two triples, and David Warat, Wes Hicks and Chad Wells all had two RBI as Marion County whipped Chattahoochee County 11-1 on Wednesday in five innings.

The Panthers struck first scoring a run in the opening frame, but the Eagles responded with two in the bottom of the inning and six in the second to take a commanding 8-1 lead.

“Any time you can get a win is good, and scoring early is big, too,” said Marion County coach Derek Goodroe. “That takes some pressure off. They scored first and drew first blood, and we had to answer back and that was important for us.”

With the win, the Eagles (8-4) rebounded from a 13-5 loss to Rutland on Tuesday and passed last season’s win total of seven.

Hicks had a RBI-double in the second, and Warat drove in two on his double in the inning.

Pitcher Dillon Burns made his first start of the season going four innings and allowing one run and two hits with five strikeouts.

Chase Cook had two hits with a double, and he came in the fifth on the mound to close the game by striking out two of the three batters he faced.

Goodroe hopes the game can be a confidence booster for Wells while Teasley and Hicks continue their hot starts to the season, batting over .400 on the year.

“Chad’s been down a little bit, so we let him DH (designated hitter) today,” said Goodroe. “We told him let’s try to concentrate on hitting and get that going. When he hits, our team plays behind him well, and we have a good chance of winning. He’s a big part of our lineup.”

The Eagles travel to two-time defending region champion Callaway on Friday. Despite the Cavaliers’ tradition, Goodroe said they are not making a fuss about it.

“The thing we preach is that we’re not playing an opponent, but the game of baseball,” he said. “We do what we can do. If the ball’s hit to you, make the play. They know who it is. We try to play the same way every time out. We don’t get up for one game and come out flat the next. We want to go out there and get after it every game.”

Tuesday’s game

Lukas Teasley and Cody Brown each had two-run singles, but Marion County committed seven errors in losing to Rutland, 13-5.

The Hurricanes built a 9-2 lead through five innings, and after adding four more in the seventh, the Eagles scored three in the bottom of the inning, but it wasn’t enough.

“Rutland has a fine ball club, however, we made things too easy for them,” said Goodroe. “Our defense has been pretty solid all season long, but we had multiple errors. We have to make the routine plays and make our opponents earn their runs.”
