Wildcats dominate Chattahoochee County
March 30, 2008

CUSSETA — Jonathon Deriso went 4-for-4 with three RBI, and David Byrd gave up one run in three innings of work as Schley County whipped Chattahoochee County 13-1 in five innings on Friday.

Will Gordon had three hits and three RBI, and Byrd and Jake McCook each drove in two runs as the Wildcats improved to 8-3 and 2-0 in Region 4-A.

“We try to tell them that every region game is important and to go in and give their best effort,” said coach Chuck Cheek. “I was pleased with how we came out. We scored in every inning, and we did a better job of hitting with runners in scoring position.”

Schley County led 7-0 when Chattahoochee County (2-6) scored its only run of the game. The Panthers had a double, their only hit, and followed it up on a hit that was booted in the infield and found its way to the outfield.

McCook and Deriso had RBI-doubles in the third and fifth innings, respectively, and all 10 RBI were on singles.

“I thought we hit the ball real well,” said Cheek. “Every hit we had, the bas was hit real hard somewhere. Jonathon and Will absolutely stroked the ball.”

McCook made his second start of the season; his first ended in the first inning with a collision at first base. With shortstop Nik Bentley out sick and Tyler Tondee’s shoulder healed, Cheek said there will be some lineup decisions to be made.

McCook was at first, Tondee was behind the plate and Gordon was at shortstop on Friday.

“We’ve got some guys on the bench capable of starting for folks, and when they get the chance, they’ve got to hit the ball hard and Jake did that,” said Cheek.

Jesse Colter had a double and pitched the fourth inning, and Christopher Tondee, who’s been hampered with shoulder soreness, pitched the fifth, striking out two of the three batters he faced.

Schley County will be back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Marion County.
