Raiders rip Warriors, 8-2

AMERICUS — Southland’s Ray Lamb has already pitched a one-hitter this season, but he said that wasn’t his best moment of the year so far.
That came on Thursday.
With the Raiders ahead and the Brookwood Warriors threatening with the bases loaded and no outs in the seventh, Lamb made a diving stab of a ground ball behind second base to start a 4-6-3 double play that helped the Raiders hold on for an 8-2 win.
Lamb said he makes plays like that only once in a while.
“I was glad to get to it,” said Lamb. “When it went behind second base, I had to dive to get to it. It felt pretty good when I got it. I could carely get it out of my glove; I didn’t think I would get it out soon enough.”
“I call that a Major League play,” said Raiders coach David Cochran. “That’s the kind of baseball we want to play. That was a big lift he gave us. When you go from the bases loaded with no outs to two outs, the complexion changes quite a bit.”
Scott Burgess, who took the mound for the first time since April 4, pitched the final two innings and induced a fly ball to right field from the next batter to end the game.
The Raiders (11-5) wasted no time in taking a 5-0 lead in the first inning as the first six batters reached base. Michael Swain had a two-run single, and two scored on a Cody Bivins fielder’s choice in which the ball went sailing on the throw to first base in trying for the double play.
Swain (5-0) pitched five innings, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out eight. The only run he allowed came on a Kyle Brown solo home run to start the second inning.
He said his arm was hurting a bit in the third inning, but he got stronger in the fourth and fifth innings.
“I was just a little tight and tender in my elbow,” he said. “It’s been bothering me a little bit the last couple of days. I needed to work it out today, and I was on a pitch count the whole time. I wanted to get the work in to be ready for next week.
“I didn’t let it bother me when I was out there. If you let up, they’ll start hitting you. I was not worried about injury or anyhting like that. I go out there and throw like there’s nothing wrong.”
Swain was the lone multiple-hitter in the game, going 2-for-3. He said of the first inning: “That’s what we needed to do, jump on them early. It’s a lot easier to play up by five than down by five. We took the air out of them and they never recovered.”
Southland scored one run in the second and third innings behind a Will Webb double and a Lamb liner over the second baseman.
Chandler Holloway capped off the rout with a solo home run to start the sixth inning. It was his only at-bat of the game; he played first base but Jess Alexander (1-for-1, hit by pitch) batted in his place the first two rounds.
