ROBERTA — Four Eagles had three or more hits and Marion County’s fight for the postseason is still alive after a 14-5 win at Crawford County on Friday.
Chris Miller hit a three-run home run in the third to break open a 4-3 lead as the Eagles had 17 hits in the game, including six infield singles.
“Step one of our four-game journey is complete,” said coach Derek Goodroe. “We still have a long way to go, but we are again focused and are going to make a run for it. We need to win out and for Heard to drop a game to either Lamar or Rutland.”
A game after Goodroe sent a message by benching two starters in a 12-1 loss versus Brookstone, Marion responded.
Luke Teasley had four hits with three stolen bases, and Cody Brown, Dillon Burns and Chad Wells all had three hits. Burns had RBI-doubles in the first and sixth innings, and Brown had a RBI-double in the second.
“I think we came out and laid it on the line,” said Goodroe. “The boys played with a lot of emotion and we are going to have to keep playing over our heads in order to win out.”
Goodroe said the game in comparison with Tuesday’s loss at Rutland was like night and day. That game the Eagles struck out 17 times.
“We put pressure on them every inning and we did a good job of scoring runs with two outs,” he said. “That has been somewhat of a problem for us this season, however, we were able to score 10 with two outs tonight.”
Brown (6-3) pitched four-plus innings allowing five runs on eight hits. David Warat entered the game in the fifth with the Eagles ahead 7-5 and struck out six to get his second save of the year.
“Cody did a good job of staying composed and got us out of several jams,” said Goodroe. “David entered the game in the fifth and dominated.”
The Eagles (13-10, 7-6) host Callaway on Tuesday and Manchester on Wednesday before traveling to Manchester on Thursday to finish the season. Teasley no-hit the Cavaliers in a 7-0 win on March 28.
