ELLAVILLE — Tyler Tondee hit a grand slam and a three-run homer to lead Schley County to a pair of 15-1 and 16-1 victories over Greenville on Friday.
The wins keep the Wildcats in contention for the second seed in Region 4-A. They must win Thursday against Brookstone to have any shot at hosting a first-round playoff series.
Coach Chuck Cheek said the Wildcats (17-6) had their longest practice of the season on Wednesday, lasting about four hours. He also said the extra work showed in the sweep.
“We finally played like we were having fun, which was good for us,” he said. “It wasn’t intentional to practice that long, but the kids realized Tuesday that we couldn’t play like we did and we had to get better. It was one of our better practices in a long time.”
Schley County beat Chattahoochee County 6-1 on Tuesday, but Cheek said his team was flat the entire game. Not on Friday. They had 18 hits and the pitchers allowed six hits in the doubleheader.
Tondee drove in four runs in Game 1, and David Byrd had two. Jonathon Deriso had two hits, two RBIs and a double in the game. Chad Crook added two hits, and Jesse Colter had a double.
Will Gordon (1-0) pitched four innings, striking out five and allowing a solo home run in the fourth. Alec Davis struck out two of three batters he faced in the fifth.
The Wildcats were walked eight times and they scored three on wild pitches/passed balls.
Game 2 was much of the same. Schley had eight hits led by Gordon’s two, and Byrd, Taylor Law and Nik Bentley all had doubles. Law’s drove in two in the third, and Byrd’s came after Gordon hit a solo home run in the second inning. Tondee’s grand slam came in the first.
Colter pitched three innings striking out seven, and Crook induced three ground balls in the fourth. Just like the first game, Schley scored three on passed balls/wild pitches.
“Our guys knew that if we played like we did against Chattahoochee we had a chance to get beat,” said Cheek. “I was pleased with how we came out and our approach to the game. We took care of business.”
