Kobs finishes second at state track meet in high jump
April 27, 2008

ALBANY — A day after contributing to the Southland golf team, Sean Kobs was trying to win the high jump at the GISA AAA state track and field meet in Albany.

But after battling Sherwood’s Stephen Cannady jump for jump, Kobs had to settle for second place because of a scratch one of his jumps.

Coach Jack Harris said Kobs and Cannady reached a height of 6 feet, 5 inches. The mark placed Kobs only behind Roger Hobgood in the Southland record book, who had a 6-6.

Kobs also placed fifth in the triple jump.

“Sean started out jumping at six feet, and for him to finish at 6-5 and not be able to practice more than he could, I thought he excelled and represented our school well,” said Harris.

Southland’s only other qualifier was Mack Greene, who finished seventh in the shot put with a distance of 43 feet, 3 inches.

Greg Smith and Bo Minor both qualified in the discus, but didn’t place in the top eight. Others who qualified for the state meet, but didn’t reach the last heat were the 400-meter relay team, Chance Israel (110 hurdles), Matthew Garland (400-meter dash) and Katelyn Clements (100- and 200-meter dashes).
