Southland places 10th, Fowler medalist for girls with 77 at state golf match

— ALBANY — Golfers played through heavy rains for at least nine holes on Monday at the GISA AAA state tournament at Doublegate Country Club in Albany.
And when it was finally over, Deerfield and Stratford were deadlocked, meaning sudden death. The two teams played the first hole again, combined all five scores and the Knights were victorious by one stroke, winning their second state championship in a row.
Southland finished 10th, led by Kathryn Fowler’s 77, which was low medalist for the girls. Augusta Prep’s Lee Knox was the top medalist overall, scoring a 4-under-par 68.
“The was the most exciting state championship I’ve been to since I’ve been coaching golf,” said Southland coach Rob Ivey. “But overall, I think a lot of people had a rough day.”
Augusta Prep (312) was third, FPD (320) fourth and Pinewood (324) rounded out the top five teams.
Mason Law and Peter Lee shot an 83 and 84 for Southland, and Jay Buchanan and Sean Kobs each scored a 91.
Ivey said he was disappointed in the team’s finish, but he knew it would be a tough day considering the weather.
“In these situations, these guys are used to sitting home and not playing golf,” he said. “Only people like Kathryn or those on the junior tours play in these conditions. There was never any thunder or lightning, there were off and on heavy rains, but we played right through them.”
Joining Knox on the All-State team were: Ashton Pellicano (Deerfield) 71; John White (Stratford) 71; Brandon Oliver (Pinewood) 72; Kurt Lane (Westfield) 74; and Harrison Bell (Riverside Military) 74.
Ivey said he followed Fowler’s group during the tournament and was impressed how she responded after a triple bogey on hole No. 10.
“She had an unlucky bounce there, but that happens sometimes,” he said. “But the way she composed herself and (made) par the next two holes, I am very proud of her for that. She was visibly disappointed, but she shrugged it off and went to the next hole and played a pretty good rest of the round. She’s definitely a game and I expect great things from her in the future.”
Of Southland’s top five golfers, all but Kobs are juniors. Ivey said Lee and Buchanan both plan on going to golf schools this summer and is already excited about next season.”
