COLUMBUS — Schley County’s Carmetrick Ross won three events and was a part of two others in taking the high-point scorer at the Region 4-A track meet on Tuesday at Shaw High in Columbus.

The Wildcats won their second title in a row scoring 150 points with Taylor County a distant second with 108. Schley County is sending seven boys in 12 events to the state track meet set for May 8-10.

“We feel like we can score a lot of points at the state meet,” said coach Tim Peavy. “Carmetrick could very well finish first in all three field events and win the high point award. He’s got that much ability.”

Ross won the high jump with a mark of 5-8; he’s jumped 6-8 so far this season. But with everyone else scratching, Peavy said it’s a mind game set for the state meet.

“It’s a mental thing to play with folks at the state meet. They’ll see 5-8 and don’t know what he’s capable of doing,” he said. “We could’ve kept going, but we stopped him. He’d already won the long jump and triple jump.”

Ross had a distance of 21-8 in the long jump, and he edged teammate Charvis Mann in the triple jump for the first time this season with a mark of 44-6. Mann was second in the triple jump with a distance of 42-5.

“It just clicked with Carmetrick,” said Peavy. “He has such leaping ability and finally picked up rhythm of the triple jump. He’s really coming on there.

“Charvis jumped well, and I feel like with those two guys, they could go 1-2 in the state or switch up.”

Mann won the 300-meter intermediate hurdles and the 100-meter hurdles with times of 42.07 and 15.53. Both Mann and Ross were a part of the 1,600-meter relay team that finished second with a time of 3:39. Courtland Edwards and Jim David McFather were also part of the relay team.

McFather finished second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:04.65, and Peavy believes he can shave off at least five seconds by the state meet.

Jontu Solomon won the discus and finished second in the shot put. It came down to his last throw in the discus when he tossed it a distance of 124 feet, 1 inch. He edged Brookstone’s Leland McCluskey by three inches. He had a distance of 45-7 in the shot put, but scratched on an attempt that reached 48 feet.

Deondrick Pina qualified in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.51. He was third in the 200 and will serve along with Jaymes Turner as alternates for the 1,600-meter relay team.

“I couldn’t be more pleased with their effort,” said Peavy. “To get 150 points in any track meet is a great accomplishment. We approached it as a business trip and they responded. You never know what can happen; it’s possible things won’t go exactly as planned.

“With seven kids, we’re real excited. We finished seventh last year, and our goal is to be in the top three.”
