ALBANY — The Americus Blue Tide won the 10th Annual South Georgia Cup outscoring their rivals, the Flint River Rapids, by more than 400 points last Saturday.

The Blue Tide finished with 1,496 points compared with 991 for Flint River and 189 for the Darton Aqua Darts. ABT swimmers provided several of the meet’s highlights.

Taylor Carnes picked up two more state championship qualifying times, in the 9-10 girls 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard backstroke. She has qualified to swim in four events at this summer’s championship meet in Savannah.

Andrew McDonald is closing in on the state mark, winning the 9-10 boys 50-yard freestyle less than three tenths of a second shy of the qualifying time.

Kalman DeMott and Karina Malmquist both broke meet records. Kalman set the mark in the 7-8 boys 50-yard freestyle by breaking the record that was set in 1999 by teammate Matthew Self — the year Kalman was born. Malmquist broke the 15 & over women’s 100-yard fly record.

DeMott, Elizabeth Gill and McDonald each won all four of their events.
