AMERICUS — Shawn Robinson hooked up with Keon Wiggins for a 58-yard touchdown and Adam Heath kicked a 35-yard field goal as the White team defeated the Blue 10-0 in Americus-Sumter’s intra-squad scrimmage on Thursday.

The Panthers are introducing a new system this season, even more fast-paced than last year’s that saw them average more than 50 plays a game.

This new version of the hurry-up offense, which Auburn used in its Peach Bowl win against Clemson, is expected to give Americus-Sumter 70-plus plays, said head coach Mark Wilson.

“We’ve done it all before, but it’s a little better organized,” he said. “It will get the ball to a lot of different people. You hit them little screens here, throw the short passes there, and then you get a deep one.”

The deep one came with 3:13 left in the second quarter when Robinson hit the speedy Wiggins down the right sideline.

There was a combined four turnovers in the game, including a fumble recovery by Jamie Holloway and an interception from Cedric Gatewood.

“We’ve got to work on the turnovers,” said Wilson. “We’ve only had seven days to really do it practice-wise. The kids have picked it up well, and they have a good attitude. A lot of the seniors are taking leadership with the discipline and stuff like that.”

Junior Jerroski Walton had his way, running over several Panther defenders. He, along with Robinson and Sims may be the go-to guys on offense entering the fall.

“(Walton) has had a real good spring,” said Wilson. “He’s not real big, but he’s pretty strong and fast. He will always find that hole, and he has vision. I thought Shawn did a good job checking off to some passes, and he had good command of the huddle and getting everyone in the right place. Tay’s going to play some defense, and we’ll move him around. We’ll have a package for him like (former Arkansas running back Darren) McFadden. We’ll use him at quarterback some, running back some, wide receiver and wherever we can get the ball to him.”

The Panthers will be replacing eight starters on defense and five on offense. The big hole is at linebacker where Jeremy Sims and Quinton Walters vacated positions. They were the top tacklers on the team with more than 135 each.

Americus-Sumter will work to improve a 5-6 record from 2007. It started out 5-1 before losing its final five games of the season.
