ELLAVILLE — The Schley County boys basketball team won a school-record 16 games this regular season and was seconds away from its first playoff berth to the Class A state tournament in five years.
A new enthusiasm was growing under coach Lang Oglesby, but the Oglesby era is already over after just one season.
The Schley County Board of Education officially accepted his resignation last Thursday, this coming after a brief in the Macon Telegraph on April 25 saying he had already accepted the position of head girls basketball coach at Mary Persons.
Oglesby, who lives in Byron and commuted to Ellaville, was the boys middle school coach at Mary Persons prior to coming to Schley County. He served there and Byron Middle School for one year and was an assistant coach at Taylor County before that.
Oglesby did not return messages left on his cell phone.
Schley County Athletics Director Rusty Tondee said they have already interviewed one candidate and have a few more to conduct, and they hope to have a coach in place within two weeks.
“There is a good nucleus of players returning for next year and we plan to have someone in place to be able to get some serious summer work done with our team,” he said. “We hope to build next year on the excitement started this past season.”
Tondee wished the best to Oglesby.
“I know he will do a great job with his energy and enthusiasm there,” he said. “He is a good, young coach with a bright future and we appreciate what he did with our program and the fine season we had.”
Oglesby’s wife works for Bibb County Schools, and he has two children, including Kalo who will be a sophomore when school starts in August.
