12-U Stallions top Crisp County in first game

HAWKINSVILLE — The Sumter Stallions 12-and-under baseball team began its season Monday with a 7-4 win against Crisp County at a tournament in Hawkinsville.

Hunter Weldon had a double and three-run home run, and Geoffrey McDonald added a double to go with 10 strikeouts and four runs on four hits allowed in five innings pitched.

The Stallions trailed 2-0 after the first before tying the game in the second. Weldon’s home run put the Stallions up for good, 5-2, in the third.

Thomas Welch added a double and single; Mike Russell tripled; and Aaron Morris and Reed Dillard also doubled.

“We played well other than a few baserunning mistakes,” said coach Marty McDonald. “We’ve got a lot of work to do before we are ready to play the top teams in the state.

“Our biggest strength is probably our speed and infield depth. If we play smart error-free ball, we will be OK. I look forward to seeing how they come together as a team.”
