ALBANY — The Southland Academy Lady Raiders improved to 4-0 on the season with three wins at the Deerfield-Windsor Tournament on Saturday.
Led by the bats of Caroline Clark and Lindsey Booker and the pitching from Chezleigh Berry, Southland beat Terrell Academy, Crisp Academy and Tiftarea.
In the opener, Caroline Clark was 3-for-4 with two RBI and Lindsey Booker was 2-for-4 as the Lady Raiders beat Terrell 7-3. Clark had a two-run double in the first inning as Southland jumped out to a 4-0 lead, and Berry added a two-run single in the fifth.
Elliott Martin added a double, and Berry allowed one earned run on four hits in six innings.
Martin led Southland in an 8-2 win against Crisp, going 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Tobi West had a two-run single in the first inning, and Clark added some insurance with a two-run double in the fifth.
Berry pitched two innings this game, making way for freshman Alex Lindsey who saw her first varsity time on the mound. Lindsey pitched three innings, allowing three hits and one run.
In the final game, Booker led four Lady Raiders with multiple hits, recording three that included a double as Southland beat Tiftarea 7-2. Clark, Berry and Sara Cathryn Parker all had two hits. Berry drove in three runs, including two on a double in the fifth, and Parker had a two-run single in the first.
Berry pitched the full seven innings, allowing two earned runs on two hits.
“I was very pleased with the girls,” said coach Brook Peterson. “We jumped out on top early and worked together and did our job. We got on base, moved the runners and were very aggressive on the bases today.”
Peterson said Booker and Clark seem to energize the team, and they will need to continue to do that for the Lady Raiders to be successful.
“They’re senior leaders, and they take pressure off the other girls. It helps them relax and play hard,” she said.
Peterson added Berry’s offense was a pleasant surprise and her pitching was what she expected.
“Last year she hit the ball hard, but she it right to people,” she said. “Today she hit it and found the gaps. On the mound, it took her a little while to get going, but she finally hit her spots and our defense really stepped up and made the plays.”
Southland has three games this week. It hosts Mount de Sales on Monday before traveling to Crisp Academy on Thursday and Tattnall Square on Friday. Thursday’s game will be at the Crisp County Recreational Complex, the home of this year’s GISA Final Four.
