Southland fends off Mount de Sales for 3-2 win

Chris Whitaker

AMERICUS — With the winning runs on second and third base, Southland coach Brook Peterson would make a call that would win or lose the game.

The Lady Raiders led 3-0 entering the seventh, but Mount de Sales wasn’t going to go quietly. So after pulling to within 3-2, Peterson gave pitcher Chezleigh Berry the message.

“She was hitting her spots, so I told her to try and jam them,” said Peterson. “Her drop ball was working, and they were extending up on anything over the plate.”

The next two batters popped out and Southland won, improving to 5-0 on the year. Berry (5-0) scattered eight hits and struck out five in the win.

The Lady Raiders took a 1-0 lead in the first when Mollie McGowan laid down a sacrifice bunt that moved Lindsey Booker to second. But with no one covering third, Booker took the base and then scored when the ball was thrown away, all on the bunt.

Tobi West and Berry each had RBI singles in the second, but that was it for the offense. Sara Schuster added a double in the game.

“We jumped out hitting the ball, but I guess we got stagnant and weren’t patient at the plate,” said Peterson.

Madi Harrington led Mount de Sales going 4-for-4.

Southland returns to action Thursday when it travels to take on Crisp Academy at the Crisp County Recreational Complex. First pitch is 5 p.m.
