Schley, Southland post shutouts on the softball field

ROCHELLE — Schley County softball coach Brandy Conner was a four-year starter in her playing days at Wilcox County.
She won the offensive award twice and the team’s MVP twice as Ginny Clack’s shortstop.
The two talked briefly Friday about Tuesday’s game, and Conner said some humor was mixed in with the conversation.
“The last thing she said was, ‘Don’t beat on us too bad,’ ” she said.
It wasn’t what Conner expected, but her Lady Wildcats won 6-0.
Stephanie Veatch delivered a two-run double in the first, and Brittany Byrd finished the game off with a two-run single in the sixth as Schley County (14-4, 5-0) remained undefeated in Region 2A-A.
“I was real anxious,” said Conner. “You always have a little bit of anxiety when you go up against your former coach.
“I was pleased with the win, but I think we played a little complacent. I don’t think we played to our full potential.”
Caitlyn Bass is starting to make a name for herself. She struck out 10 batters and walked none in improving to 10-3 on the year.
“She was real crisp today,” said Conner. “She’s getting a lot more comfortable with her role. With Cami (Fripp), it revolved around what she did on the mound. Caitlyn’s starting to follow through on that, and she’s ready to lead the team I feel like.”
Kayla Womack and Bree Franks each had two hits, including RBI-singles in the first, and Bonnie Catherine Morris doubled in the sixth.
Schley returns to action Thursday when it travels to Dooly County.
