Eagles score 60 in win at Webster County

Chris Whitaker

PRESTON — Marion County continued its domination of Region 4-A opponents Friday, this time handing Webster County a 60-12 defeat.

Allen McKay played only the first half, and he had 234 yards rushing on 16 carries and scored four touchdowns (6, 3, 8, 7). Ykeem Wells had 100 yards rushing and a 37-yard touchdown, and FaShawn Swanson made his first start at quarterback and rushed for three touchdowns and 42 yards.

Coach Calvin Aldridge said McKay had two other touchdowns called back, each being more than 40 yards.

“He was a wrecking crew,” he said. “We did a lot of things and probably used six or seven running backs. They didn’t have enough speed to stay with us.”

The Eagles rushed for 451 yards in the game, scoring all nine touchdowns on the ground, the last coming on a Vennie Thornton 20-yard run with 1:33 left in the third quarter.

Webster County (0-6, 0-5) tied the game at 6 when it returned a kickoff 85 yards with 8:25 left in the first quarter. It didn’t score again until 17 seconds left in the game.

The Eagles had two turnovers, but forced three. Corey Hulin and Delvin Hill each had interceptions and Robert Mathis recovered a fumble that Brandon Green forced on a kickoff. Marion County converted all three into touchdowns.

Michael Wilburn, Harold McCarthy and Milton Carter all had six tackles, and Carter and Keon Rembert each had a sack.

“The defense played quite well, and I was impressed with them. The first bunch didn’t give up anything,” he said. “The first touchdown was on a kickoff return where we missed a tackle and he went down the sideline. They didn’t have a lot of size and speed, and it was one of those games where size mattered.”

The win sets up a showdown for first place this week as Brookstone visits Draneville. Both teams are 6-0 and 5-0 in region play. It’s the first time the Eagles are 6-0 and the second time for Aldridge as a coach.

Aldridge pointed out that Class A has eight undefeated teams, and four will play next week. The other two are the top-ranked team in the state in ECI and Johnson County.

“It’s going to be a packed house,” said Aldridge. “It’s one of those games everybody’s interested in. It should be over in a half an hour since we both like to run the football. The winner becomes first in the region and everybody else will be chasing you. It’s one of those big opportunities that only comes along now and again. The team has worked hard to get in that position, and we’ll have to play a very good football game.”
