TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Freshman Dee Smith played 36 minutes and scored a double-double in her first collegiate basketball game, going for 29 points and 12 rebounds in a 62-53 loss at Tallahassee Community College.
The Lady Jets held a 29-28 halftime lead, but back-to-back 3-pointers with about four minutes remaining gave the Lady Eagles the lead for good.
“The effort was the best I’ve seen,” said coach Brandan Harrell. “We played good enough to beat a very good team on the road, but they’re best player (Tiffany McClure) took control of the game, and that’s the difference between having sophomore guards and freshmen guards.”
SGT shot 34 percent for the game, compared with 30 percent for TCC. The big difference was free throws — the team made 13 of 27.
McClure led TCC with 17 points. The Lady Eagles won the rebounding edge 54-44 and forced 19 turnovers.
Shonketta Christian had nine points with four rebounds in only 19 minutes of play because of foul trouble.
