Americus-Sumter’s Burts selected to participate in GHSA All-Star game

MARIETTA — Although she has only play soccer for two seasons, Americus-Sumter goalie Aleigha Burts is quickly making a name for herself on the high school level. Following a strong junior campaign, Burts’ natural ability in the net was rewarded with a selection to play in DiVarsity.com’s 2014 Georgia High School Association All-Star game in Marietta on Sunday.

Burts began her soccer career last year as a sophomore for Head Coach John Daughety’s Lady Panther squad. At the beginning of this season, Daughety was looking for a keeper to step between the pipes and become a brick wall for his team. Burts accepted the challenge, and she not only turned in a serviceable performance for the Lady Panthers, but also became a game-changer by turning away shot-after-shot.

In 2014, Burts collected an amazing 273 saves in the net. In a very strong girl’s soccer region, she kept the Lady Panthers in several close games throughout the year. Burts also played some on defense for Daughety, showing her versatility and play-making ability.

For her sensational performance in only her second year on the field, Burts will now head to Sprayberry High School on Sunday to compete against the best soccer players from all classifications in the state of Georgia. Burts will play on the 22-member blue team, and she will be one of just two goalies on her squad. Rutland’s Setara Long will also split time between the pipes for the blue team.

The blue team is coached by The Westminster’s School’s Clark Meyer and Northview’s Jen Barr. Burts’ squad will take on the white team in a 4 p.m. contest. According to their website, this will be the 17th year that DiVarsity.com has staged the Georgia High School All-Star Soccer Games.
