Southland’s Volley signs with Brewton Parker

AMERICUS — Southland Academy standout basketball player announced his college destination on Thursday afternoon in a signing ceremony. The electric star of the Raiders will continue his basketball career at Brewton Parker College next fall after a huge senior season for Southland in 2013-14.

Volley played one season at Southland Academy and he quickly put his name on the drawing board of Southland’s opponents. Volley’s rare ability to play nearly every position for the Raiders made him a dangerous weapon under the basket, beyond the three-point arc, and everywhere in between.

Volley’s tremendous senior season for the Raiders included leading the team in scoring, assists, and rebounds. He helped lead the team to a 21-6 record, the regular season Region 3 Championship, and a trip to the Elite 8 in the GISA state playoffs. His post season honors included being named Region 3-AAA Player of the Year, a GISA All-State selection, and being chosen to play on the Senior All-Star Team.

Brewton Parker competes in the NAIA’s Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC). Last season, the Barrons went 9-15 overall and 6-9 in conference play.

Last season the Southland Raiders came up three points short of a trip to the GISA Class AAA title game. Despite the tough semifinal loss, the 2013 season was still one of the most successful campaigns by a Raider football team in recent memory. Thirteen seniors led the way for Southland last season but the departure of those leaders, along with a new head football coach, will present several unique challenges for the Raiders in 2014.

  • Lady Wildcats drop season opener to Lee County

As the 2014 softball season gets under way, expectations are as high as usual for Head Coach Brandy Conner’s Schley County Lady Wildcat softball team. As one of the top teams in the Class A, Schley County normally opens the season with a non-region game against a much larger school known for their softball program. For the second season in a row, that team was Class AAAAAA’s Lee County High School, and for the second year in a row the Lady ‘Cats proved that they can hang with anyone on the softball diamond.
