Sumter County Gymnastics finishes season with four state champions

AMERICUS — Sumter County Gymnastics had a great year of competitions for the 2013-2014 season, and they topped off a tremendous season it by bringing home four state champions on the weekends of April 26-27 and May 3-4.

On April 26-27, the Level 3 and Prep Optional gymnasts traveled to Cumming Georgia for their state meet. Kate Busman, Averi Smith, and Madison Smith all brought home individual state titles. Busman led the way with two state titles, placing first on beam with a 9.425, first on floor with a 9.575, and she finished second all around with a total score of 36.95.

Madison Smith also placed first on floor with a 9.575, and she added a fourth place all around finish with 36.525 total points. Averi Smith scored a 9.6 to bring home first on floor as well.

Nine other gymnasts also competed at this state meet, bringing home many medals and scoring some personal bests. Savanna Goodin placed second on vault with a 9.325 and sixth all around with a 36-point total. Candice Wiggins brought home third on the beam with an 8.85, and fourth place finishes were  collected by Morgan Minick with a 9.2 on vault, Halle Crenshaw with an 8.975 on bars, and Myer Bernstein with a score of 8.5 also on bars. Madison Ingram was fifth on floor with a 9.225 and Macie Deriso placed fifth on vault with an 8.95. Jadie Burrell was seventh on beam with an 8.45.

On May 3-4, the Level 1 and Level 2 girls competed at their state meet in Roswell. Ella Arnold brought home a state title on vault with a score of 9.325, and Mariana Detitta earned a silver medal on vault with a 9.45 to finish second.

Placing fourth on vault was Wimberly Hines with a score of 9.35. Kursten Dutcher was sixth on vault with a 9.1, and Makiyia Jones brought home seventh on vault with a 9.25. Eighth place finished were earned by Mikayla Willis on vault with a 9.2, Eva Grace Studdard with a 9.025 on floor, Miranda Lee on vault with an 8.9, and Gracie Burrell on beam with an 8.5.

“We are very proud of all our gymnasts have accomplished this year,” said Gymnastics Director Melissa Singley. “The girls were scoring personal bests at every meet this year and always setting the bar higher for themselves. We look forward to what the 2014-15 season will bring.”

    Georgia Southwestern State University head women's basketball coach Kelly Britsky has announced the addition of Emili Russ to the Lady Hurricane squad for the 2014-15 season.
    Russ signed with the Lady 'Canes after playing last season for Central Georgia Technical College in Macon. She will join the program in the fall with two years of eligibility remaining.

  • Americus Travelers finish in top 3 at USSSA World Series

    The Americus Travelers 14U Baseball Club, after a stellar season on the baseball diamond, again peaked at the right time; finishing as the number three team at the USSSA Global Sports Baseball World Series in Orange Beach, Ala. last week. Coach Tim Estes’ squad entered the event with a record of 23–9 -1 on the season, and there were 35 teams from eight states competing for the title of World Series Champion.

    The Avenue of Flags flies in Andersonville National Historic Site five times per year during days of special significance. Following the end of the Independence Day holiday, the Southland Academy football team took a break from their summer workouts to help take down the 200+ flags on Monday, July 7.

    South Georgia Technical College Lady Jets head basketball coach James Frey has been named Athletic Director for the college effective July 1, 2014, announced South Georgia Technical College President Sparky Reeves. Frey will continue to serve as the Lady Jets head basketball coach, as well as work as a Recreation and Leisure Management instructor. Reeves also announced that Kezia Conyers and Chris Ballauer have been hired as full-time instructors and assistant basketball coaches for the Lady Jets and Jets.
