South Georgia Tech’s Jets clinch conference title, Lady Jets advance to GCAA semifinals

AMERICUS — For the first time since the inception of the Jets program in 2001, both South Georgia Technical College men’s and women’s basketball teams have earned Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) Conference Titles.

Monday night, the Jets defeated Georgia Highlands College 79-52 to clinch the top spot in the conference, earning themselves a berth in the National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Tournament in Kansas in March. This will be the Jets’ second trip to the national tournament.

In the game against Georgia Highlands, the Jets had four scorers in double digits. Brandon Jackson posted 16 points, followed by Anthony Ethridge with 15 points and ten rebounds. Treshaad Williams earned 14 points, and Femi Ojuolape tossed in ten points.

Despite a disappointing loss to Georgia Highlands College last week to end the regular season, the Lady Jets also finished out their regular season on top of the GCAA, with Head Coach James Frey being named the GCAA Coach of the Year and sophomore Shameekia “Polly” Murray being named Player of the Year and first team all-conference. Sophomore teammates Alexia Somerset, Shaquita Snow, and Nikkei Blackburn were named to the Second Team All Conference GCAA.

The Lady Jets hosted East Georgia College in the first round of the Region Tournament on Tuesday and pulled off a 75-37 win. Nikkei Blackburn collected 18 points and had ten rebounds, TaQuandra Mike tossed in 13 points, and Shaquita Snow had 7 assists. They will host the remainder of the semi-finals in The Hangar today and Saturday, facing off against Darton at 7:30 p.m. tonight following the 5:30 p.m. matchup of Georgia Highlands and Central Georgia Tech. The winners of those two games will face off on Saturday, March 1 at 2:00 p.m.

“We are excited to start the tournament off with a win and to be hosting the Final Four,” said  Frey. “This was a goal of ours pre-season and it’s exciting to be realizing our goals. Our focus has been very good and we know we have a huge task ahead of us playing Darton, the Conference's defending champ. Hopefully our kids will be up for the challenge.”

The Lady Jets are just two games shy of tying the all-time winning record for women’s basketball at South Georgia Tech. The 2009-2010 team posted a 29-7 overall record following their trip to the National Junior College Athletic Association National Tournament.
