Americus Sumter boys soccer team wins big, girls fall to Westover

AMERICUS — The Americus Sumter Panthers split a soccer doubleheader on Tuesday night as they traveled to Westover High School to take on the Patriots and Lady Patriots in a region 1-AAA battle. The Lady Panthers fell short in their pursuit of an upset in Albany, but the boy’s team won big in their match-up.

The Westover Patriots scored early and often against the visiting Lady Panthers in the first game of the doubleheader. Despite moving the ball well against the Lady Patriots, the Lady Panthers suffered a 10-0 loss. Although the Lady Panthers lost big, their coaches are pleased with the progress the young team has made since the beginning of the season. “We are heading in the right direction, and the freshmen are beginning to play together and understand the game,” said Lady Panther’s head coach John Daughety.

In the boy’s game, the Panthers were looking to beat Westover for the first time in 10 years. The Panthers accomplished this goal with a dominating effort, led by sophomore Edin Ancelmo.

Ancelmo scored the game’s first goal at the 1:48 mark to begin the game. At the 24th minute of the game, Ancelmo added his second goal of the night. With another quick goal at the 32 minute mark by Eddie Montes, with an assist from Nestor Lepiz, the Panthers began to pull away from the Patriots.

Ancelmo added his third goal of the night in the 43rd minute, with an assist from Montes. Ten minutes later, Ancelmo added an amazing fourth goal to his already staggering tally for the night. In the 66th minute of the game, Alex Brown added the sixth and final goal for the Panthers on their way to the victory.

Brown began the game in the net for the Panthers and never had an opportunity for a save. After two shots by Westover went wide of the posts, Qnealus Bell recorded the only save of the night for the boys.

The Panthers will take on Cairo High School on Friday, February 24th at home. The girls will begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by the boys at 7 p.m., at Robinson/Wilson Stadium on Americus Sumter High School North Campus.
