SCGA gymnastics team goes three-for-three, prepares for Smokey Mountain Gymnastics Classic in Tennessee

AMERICUS — On February 11th, the SCGA team gymnasts traveled to Tifton, GA to compete in the Dream Believers Classic. Gymnasts from three levels represented the gym and each brought home a trophy.

The Level 2 team brought home the second place trophy and many medals. In the 9 year old division Halley Kate Turner placed first on beam with an 8.9 and first all around while Hailey Howard brought home first on bars with a 9.0 and second all around. In the 7 year old group, Macie Deriso brought home first on vault with a 9.0 and Madison Smith brought home third on floor.

The Level 3 team brought home the third place trophy.  In the 9 year old group, Passion Thomas finished first on vault with a 9.357 and first all around while Jade Sellars finished first on beam with an 8.875 and second all around. In the 8 year old group, Georgia Torbert finished third on beam and Elizabeth Law finished fourth on vault. In the 7 year old group Jadie Burrell placed first on bars with a 9.1.

The Level 4s finished third as a team. In the 9 year old group there were 13 gymnasts participating. Perri DeVane placed first on bars with an 8.825 and first all around and Rene Rix placed third on bars and third all around. Lauren Holloway placed second on floor and beam, Sarah Murphy placed second on vault, and Emma Griffin placed seventh on vault. In the 10 year old age group, Savanna Goodin placed 12th all around. In the 11 year old group, Ashleigh Estes placed second on bars, vault and all around, and Candice Wiggins placed third on beam and all around.

“Our gymnasts worked very hard leading up to this meet and we are very proud of how they performed. Many of our girls had their highest all around score this season and have been working non stop to get their scores even higher. We are going to a meet in Tennessee at the end of the month and we are very excited to see how well they perform against the competition there,” said coach Melissa Singley.  

The team is already hard at work preparing for the Smokey Mountian Gymnastics meet in Sevierville, Tennessee. The Smokey Mountian Classic will take place from the  24th to the 26th of February. The SCGA team will account for 16 of the 1300 expected kids from all states and levels at the competition.

    The Star Racing team has swept No. 1 qualifying in NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle (PSM) so far in the 2014 Mello Yello Drag Racing Series following last weekend’s NHRA Four-Wide Nationals in Charlotte, N.C. This marks the fifth career No. 1 qualifier for the team’s racer Michael Ray as he also set a new track ET record at zMAX Dragway over the weekend.

    It’s been an up and down season for the Southland Academy Lady Raiders soccer team. After a strong start in the Sherwood Invitational Tournament to open the season, the Lady Raiders have had luck go against them in their recent games. That trend continued on Monday night in Americus, when a much-improved Sherwood Lady Eagle squad scored four second half goals to pull away from Southland and claim a 6-0 win.

    The Georgia Southwestern Lady Hurricane softball team met with Peach Belt opponent Young Harris College for their Senior Day doubleheader on Saturday. The Lady 'Canes swept the Mountain Lions, claiming early runs in both games to earn two victories.
    The seniors showed up ready to show their worth during the doubleheader.

    Southland’s baseball team played the part of road warriors last week. On Thursday evening the Raiders traveled to Damascus to take on Southwest Georgia Academy (SGA) before riding to Albany on Friday for a region test against Deerfield-Windsor. Although the Raiders took the first game 3-1, the Knights ended their week on a sour note by winning the Friday night match-up 11-1 in five innings.

    Americus-Sumter County High School is in the market for a new head football coach and athletic director following the unexpected resignation of Reginald Mitchell earlier this week.
    According to Americus-Sumter High School South Campus Principal Kimothy Hadley, Mitchell informed him that he was stepping down as head football coach and athletic director earlier this week. On Thursday night, the Sumter County Board of Education approved Mitchell’s resignation.

    Marion County senior Dylan Price has been one of the most consistent pitchers in Region 4-A all season. On Tuesday night in Buena Vista, Price had all of his pitches working to perfection against the Hawkinsville Red Devils. With a complete-game effort from their ace on the mound, the Marion County Eagles were able to defeat Hawkinsville 7-1 and take a firm grasp on the third place position in the region.
