Southland wins region golf title by 6 strokes

Fowler named All-Region, Ivey Coach of the Year

ALBANY — For the first time in five years, Southland Academy’s golf team is the 3-AAA region champion.

Kathryn Fowler led the Raiders with a 75 in earning All-Region honors, and coach Rob Ivey was selected Coach of the Year as Southland edged Deerfield by six strokes at Doublegate Country Club in Albany.

Southland shot a 328 followed by Deerfield’s 334 and Westfield’s 340. Brookwood and Calvary Christian rounded out the scoring with a 354 and 398. The top four teams advance to the state tournament, which is May 11 at Stonebridge in Albany.

“I think it’s great for these kids,” said Ivey. “They’ve come close to Deerfield several times the last few years, and we never could get over the hump and beat them. We’d lose by two to three strokes. But now, the kids know they can them. When they finally realize they can beat these guys, it may even improve your play.”

Ivey said it’s also big for the school itself after the boys tennis team won the region championship last week.

Peter Lee scored a 79, Mason Law shot an 81, and Jay Buchanan had a 93 for Southland.

Brookwood’s Hinson Arwood was low medalist with a 74, followed by Fowler, then Deerfield’s Colin Ho and Brookwood’s Danny Steinberg who each had a 78, and Curt Lane was the unanimous wild card vote to round out the All-Region team. The wild card was based on a person’s play throughout the season and not just Tuesday.

It was Fowler’s third All-Region selection in a row.

Ivey said a PGA Nationwide Tour qualifier was played at Doublegate on Monday, leading to “super fast” greens.

Fowler had to three-putt several times, but she managed to stay close to the top of the leaderboard.

“The greens were tough, and Deerfield didn’t have a home-course advantage,” said Fowler. “It was not at all what it was normally like. The putting hurt me the most today. I hit the ball great, but I never really figured out the greens. I think it definitely affected everybody. The scores were higher today than it had been.”
